V A A 1 l BSTRACT ecent studies and commentaries link vitamin D with everal autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerois (MS). Adequate vitamin D intake reduces inflammaory cytokines through control of gene expression, thus nadequate vitamin D intake is suggested as a mechaism that could contribute to inflammation and, conseuently, development of MS. Poor vitamin D status has een associated with increased risk for development of S, and patients with MS may suffer consequences of itamin D deficiency, such as bone loss. Animal studies nd very limited human data suggest possible benefit rom vitamin D supplementation in patients with MS. ased on the current state of research, a key principle or practicing dietetics professionals is to include vitain D status in nutritional assessment.
